This year, the Ohio Hospital Association (OHA) chose “Disruption” as its theme for the annual 2019 OHA conference held in Columbus, Ohio. Speakers presented on common issues facing providers that slow or otherwise disrupt healthcare—including frequent readmissions, behavioral health concerns, and substance use disorder. They also spoke on methods for addressing these challenges.
Throughout the conference, one major theme that resurfaced was the power of information and data in identifying and addressing disruptive patterns in patient care.
Dr. Lisa Eidelberg, Senior Regional Director of Operations at Pain Management Group, highlighted the importance of using data to identify and address those struggling with substance use disorder in her presentation, “Using Data to Manage Providers and Patients in Our Communities Amidst the Opioid Crisis.” Eidelberg presented with Sara Darr, VP of Clinical Services, who focused on the impact of smart data in identifying pain management issues and benchmarking outpatient pain management for safer, more-informed treatment decisions over time. Both presenters also touched on leveraging connections in the medical community to better control the opioid epidemic.
Dr. Nancy Pook, FACEP and Medical Director at Kettering Health Network, spoke to the significance of having the full patient picture before prescribing opioids. In her presentation, “Ready, Set, PAUSE,” Dr. Pook advocated for best practices of non-opioid alternatives to pain management. Kettering Health Network recently joined the Collective Platform.
